has been saying for a year, which makes the fact that barack obama didn't have much in the way of comeback for the things that mitt romney was saying, that much more "interesting." basically, there was the famous big bird line where mitt romney said he would defund public broadcasting. he has been saying that since november of 2011 saying he is going to defund the national endowment for the arts. they fell flat and obama didn't have a response. also, mitt romney's critique of obamacare, the $716 billion cuts to medicare. these are things that obama really didn't have a response for. and again he should have because mitt romney's been telegraphing this for the past year. it was a big disappointment for people watching. >> and in fact, melissa, the president even said, well, i -- i'll adopt that term obamacare. he agreed with it. >> reporter: he seems to really enjoy it. it's there for better or worse anyway. i can tell you inside the the media room, there were lots of interesting things happening. again lots of international media there people from china, france, germany, an exc
president obama as a candidate ran on four years ago, was bringing the nation together and yet, last night on the stage, it was mitt romney talking about how he had found bipartisanship with his health care plan and president obama had not with obamacare. >> it's part of the contrast in their records, when you look at governor romney work with a democratic legislature, 87% of the seats in the state house and state senate in massachusetts were held by democrats when he was the governor, and yet they were able to work across the aisle to get things done for the people of massachusetts. they cut taxes 19 times. they balanced the budget and got a rainy day fund and upgraded their credit rating in massachusetts. they brought unemployment down to 5.7%. and that's in sharp contrast. we've had our national credit rating downgraded as a result of president obama's policies. he's not worked across the aisle and we've had unemployment go up as a result of his policies. >> gretchen: although president obama's biggest critique of your candidate is that there simply are not enough details in his plan. s
has spent the last four years in a bubble with an adoring media. but i also know that barack obama is a very excellent debater. he knows -- he will be going over the mistakes that he made and i think that he hrs is going to be much better and much better prepared in the next debate. this was really important. i saw where i think 67 million people watched. and one of the most important things about this, gret awas that they have spent -- the obama campaign has spent hundreds of millions of dollars portraying mitt romney as a bain capital capitalist, driving the unfavorables up, especially in the swing states and mitt romney, last night, came across as a person of capability, of vision and who knows what is best for america. i think that was really the most important part of that whole debate. >> greta: what do you think happened to president obama? historically, he has given speeches that have been dazzling. he has been very successful on the campaign trail. i don't need to tell but that. what happened last night? >> i think he spent four years in a bubble with an adoring media. mea
's a larger group because you have the self-employed. over the obama years, more and more people have left the labor force completely. especially older people between 50 and 56 that live off their savings and ira's before they should. some of those folks have returned in part-time work essentially in home-based businesses. about 110, 115,000 jobs are created in the establishment survey or the employer survey. but about 850 in the household survey, that would imply 700,000 or about 5% of american families have established a home-based business. it's completely implausible that that could happen. >> okay. so you say it's completely implausible and you are not the first economist to say this. and the only sample in terms of teeny fraction something like 55,000 people they call. is it possible the bureau of labor statistics extrapolate out from that? did they possibly get their estimate wrong? >> i think it's possible they got their estimate wrong. more likely is that these folked do have home based businesses but they don't earn very much money. consider the reporter getting laid off by the t

. how would you respond. >> we have seen obama over many, many years but not seen romney. those of us in the business and republican debates did. but the independents and democrats haven't had a chance to see the guy. all they have heard the vilification of him in negative ads it is not so much obama's performance that structured the debate. it is romney's performance. the question is why was romney so good? >> steve: excellent. congratulations on your new book mr. morris. >> thank you, we'll talk about it next week . globall governorance taking over the globe. >> steve: i hate it when that happens. >> gretchen: see you next week. >> brian: next on the run down. oh, joe, here you go again. >> will you guys sit down if you have seats? thank you. i didn't realize you didn't have seats, i apologize . my mother would kill me if a woman was standing for me this long. i apologize. >> brian: stand up, chuck. another biden classic coming your way. >> gretchen: a dog sneaks out of his home and tracks down his owner in the hospital miles away. >> steve: first happy birthday. steve miller, he's
't anywhere we want it to be. >> no. president -- candidate barack obama promised four years ago, no. but is it better than where we've been for 40 months, yes, as an american i'm celebrating. >> if you're running for office, you want to be on the uptick. you don't want to be going the other way. as long as it's going in the right direction, people are feeling better about themselves. this is good news for obama. and it's good news for america. >> just look at the narrative. wednesday night liberals and democrats were apocalyptic. and today friday these job numbers come out and then you have romney driving the day from what he said last night on fox news repudiating the 47%. and president obama giving two big speeches today, rallies, and he's bouncing up on stage and he's got all kinds of new lines and so on. >> but you guys, you know, as fools gold, you act like one debate is going to change the fundamental dynamics of this race. they were pretty set in beforehand and seldom if ever in history one debate is going to change the fundamental dynamics of a race. >> one may not, but two
in 1988 who was president? ronald reagan. lloyd benson had been in the senate 17 years, dan quayle, 7 years, that was about gravitas and the senior statesman versus the young new guy upstart. this time it's different because barack obama was in his 40's when he became president and even though joe biden is three decades older than paul ryan, that issue is muted a little bit. >> clayton: interestingly in 2008. then candidate biden, vice-presidential nominee at the time had a walk a delicate balance with sarah palin. he had to be respectful of her on the stage and strong a lot of people thought it was a tie at theened of the debate wherever you stand on it want matter, but here is a clip from that, we'll get you to respond to that moment. >> you voted for the war and now you oppose the war, you're one who says, as so many politicians do, i was for it before i was against it or vice versa, americans are craving straight talk. hey, if you voted for it, tell us why you voted for it and you you also said that barack obama was not ready to be command ner chief and i know again you opposed th
